The XXI Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland from 4th April 2018. As part of this event, a ceremonial baton containing the Queen’s message, is already traveling through the countries of the Commonwealth of Nations and will arrive in Western Australia in late February.
Governor Stirling SHS Mathematics teacher, Colleen Pekin has been selected to carry the baton in Hillarys on Sunday 25th February. Mrs Pekin represented Australia in athletics at two Commonwealth Games, winning bronze medals in the 100 and 200 metre sprint events and the relay.
On the afternoon of February 26th, the relay will have progressed to the City of Swan and the baton will be carried along the Swan River past our school. The school and the City of Swan will be represented by a former GSSHS physical education teacher and Olympian, Ramon Andersson.
To mark this momentous occasion and to watch the Queen’s Baton as it travels along the river, a celebration will be held in the school’s Amphitheatre. We invite all parents, students and the community to this event on Monday 26 February 2018 from 3:15pm – 5:00pm. Full details of this event will be advertised early next term.
