Djinda Academic Extension Program

The Djinda Academic Extension Program for years 9 and 10, supports the Governor Stirling SHS Vision of working together with our community to develop in our students a life-long love of learning, and of giving them the tools to thrive in their lives after school. We are committed to providing a challenging, enriching and supportive environment that enables all students to achieve personal excellence. We hold high academic expectations no matter what educational need or experience students bring to the school, and differentiate our curriculum accordingly.

The extension classes provide students with opportunities to expand their skills and content knowledge across all four MESH subjects. The classes will engage students in lessons of an accelerated pace while still covering all mandated curriculum content for their respective year level. The program is for the benefit and engagement of students who wish to explore their academic potential and develop deeper understanding and critical thinking strategies that will benefit them in their future academic pursuits.

Application and Identification

Students in years 8 and 9 can apply for the program, which takes effect in years 9 and 10. The identification of successful students will be based on an external test and achievement grades from Semester 1. Only students who are enrolled at the school can apply for the program.

Structure of the Program

Students will remain in the same class for English, Mathematics, Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences for the duration of the academic year. Students selected for placement are given support and encouragement to optimise their chances of success, but their continuation in the program is contingent on their effort and commitment to academic progress. It is highly desirable that students in this program bring their own device to maximise the educational opportunities available to them.

Monitoring

The academic progress of students in the program will be monitored on a regular and ongoing basis. Students will be encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and progress at all times, and any student who is struggling with the rigors of the assessment schedule will be given opportunities and support to improve their results. Teachers delivering the program will meet regularly with Heads of Learning Areas to discuss student progress, and parents/carers will be kept informed on a regular basis.

To remain in the Djinda program, students must comply with set expectations. At the end of each term, students will be accountable for the following:

1) They must have achieved a C grade average in each of their four classes: Mathematics, English, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences.

2) Good standing must be maintained.

3) Attendance must be at 85% or above, except where medical certificates are provided.
