Academic Gifted and Talented Program (GAT)
Governor Stirling Senior High School is proud to be one of only sixteen schools in Western Australia selected to deliver the Department of Education’s Academic Gifted and Talented Program.
Our specialised academic pathway provides students with enriching and challenging learning opportunities that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent inquiry. Through this program, students are supported to extend their learning beyond the traditional classroom and reach their full academic potential.
Students who choose Governor Stirling SHS as their preferred GAT school can also apply for one of our Approved Specialist Programs in Engineering, Artsmedia, or AFL Football, as well as our school-based Music and Netball programs.

Our Academic Gifted and Talented Program provides a personalised learning experience that challenges and inspires students to achieve their best. Through differentiated learning and academic extension opportunities, students are encouraged to think deeply, explore new ideas, and reach their full potential.
Beyond the classroom, students become part of a supportive community where they can connect with like-minded peers, collaborate on shared interests, and develop lasting friendships. Dedicated learning spaces provide opportunities for study, mentoring, and guidance from GAT teachers and the GAT coordinator.
While academic achievement is important, student well-being is equally valued. We provide strong pastoral care and personal development opportunities that help students build confidence, resilience, emotional intelligence, and the skills needed to thrive both at school and beyond.
Expert Teaching and Support
Our Academic Gifted and Talented Program is built on proven research and best practices in gifted education. We work closely with leading experts in the field and follow guidance from the Gifted Education Research, Resource, and Information Centre (GERRIC) at the University of New South Wales.
Our GAT teachers are highly trained and are passionate about helping students reach their full potential. Through ongoing professional learning, they continue to develop their expertise and provide engaging, challenging, and supportive learning experiences for all students.
GAT Parent Night and Tour
We invite prospective students and families to learn more about our Academic Gifted and Talented Program by attending a school tour or information session.
Governor Stirling Senior High School offers Principal-led tours each term, as well as a dedicated Gifted and Talented (GAT) Tour in Term 4 following our annual GAT Information Evening. During the information session, representatives from the Department of Education’s Gifted and Talented Branch explain the application process and provide information about the range of Gifted and Talented programs available across Western Australia.

How to Apply
Entry into the Academic Gifted and Talented (GAT) Program at Governor Stirling Senior High School is based on a student’s performance in the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET), which is completed in Year 6. The ASET is the entry pathway for all Gifted and Talented Academic Programs in Western Australia.
Applications for Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance programs in 2028 are NOW OPEN.
Applications are open to students who will enter Year 7 in 2028. The selection process starts when students are in Year 5, testing in Year 6, with placement starting from Year 7. Limited vacancies may also be available for entry into Years 9, 10 and 11.
Applications close Sunday, 14 February 2027 and testing will occur in Term 1, 2027.
