English

English is compulsory for all students in Year 8 to 12, and focuses on three key areas:

  • Language: Knowledge of the English language
  • Literature: Understanding, appreciating, responding to, analysing and creating literature
  • Literacy: Expanding the range of English usage.

 

Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 produce a variety of assessments including essays, newspaper reports, oral presentations, journal reflective writing and creative writing.

 

Students read novels as directed by their teachers and keep a journal. Promotion of reading for fun is a key part of English studies.  All students complete an exam at the end of semester, which also assists to prepare middle school students for senior school courses.

 

Inspiring and challenging texts are used in Years 11 and 12 English and English Literature, including novels, short stories, poetry, narratives, letters, journals, print advertising, TV drama, news, current affairs and advertising.
